Between encounter and tranquillity
Redesign of St. Kilian's Church Square in Scheßlitz
The desire was for an attractive town centre that would facilitate encounters and exchanges, but also offer peace and quiet and a place of retreat. Measures taken as part of the 2020 Integrated Urban Development Concept (ISEK) enabled the area surrounding St. Kilian's Parish Church in Scheßlitz to be redesigned. Based on the planning concept developed by the urban planning and development planning firm Wittmann, Valier und Partner, the engineering company Höhnen & Partner took on the concrete planning.
The design envisages a multifunctional square divided into two areas. To the north of the church, a meeting place for young and old was created, facilitating contact during church and community events. On the other side, to the south behind the church, a small green oasis was created, serving as a space for reflection, pause and remembrance.
Modern seating for the redesigned church square
In addition to the creation of new green spaces, new planting and the refurbishment of the paving, the redesigned church square is complemented by Thieme's ‘Kalmar’ street furniture series. Available in versions with backrests and as stool benches, the benches are characterised by their modern and functional design. The robust frame made of hot-dip galvanised steel profiles can be colour-coated in RAL or DB colours and is rounded off with a wooden seat made of Accoya. The special feature of Accoya is that the wood is treated in a chemical process with acetic anhydride. This ensures a long service life by inhibiting the colonisation of wood-destroying fungi or insects. In addition, the treated wood absorbs very little moisture, ensuring stability and durability.
Functional addition to the green oasis
To ensure long-term visual appeal and protect the benches from vandalism, an anti-flyer coating was also applied in Scheßlitz. The benches are fixed in place by screwing them down or using additional anchor rails for setting in concrete. The stools from the Ausgleicher series, made from the same materials, complete the overall picture and connect the two functional areas in the green oasis.

Street furniture as a precisely designed element in the open space concept
In addition, equipment elements from Thieme were used in the form of ‘Scape E’ bicycle racks, display cases and tilting posts from the “Scape” series, and waste bins from the ‘726’ series. The northern area was also enhanced with raised beds in steel frames, which clearly structure the space with their minimalist, linear form. They enable high-quality planting regardless of existing soil conditions and thus contribute to improving the microclimate and the quality of the space.

Inner-city islands - ventilation cover as seating and planter
Architects, landscape architects and property owners need to equip supply and exhaust air systems, for example in underground car parks, with covers and at the same time ensure a visually appealing design. With their simple and elegantly functional design, Thieme GmbH ventilation covers are an ideal and universally suitable solution for this, allowing the focus of attention to remain on the appearance of the surroundings. We work with you to develop customised solutions for individual seating elements or planters. In Münster, Westphalia, for example, organically shaped above-ground ventilation outlets were created for the ventilation of an underground car park, which function as seating, planters and supply units with integrated water connections.
